NEW JAGUAR XE: ENHANCED EXTERIOR, ALL-NEW LUXURIOUS INTERIOR AND INTUITIVE TECHNOLOGY

Enhanced exterior provides a more assertive appearance with new front and rear bumpers, advanced all-LED headlights and tail-lights with distinctive LED signatures

The new Jaguar XE delivers an enhanced exterior design, all-new luxurious interior and advanced technologies.

An updated exterior design gives the XE a more purposeful and assertive stance. Continuing on from the beautifully judged proportions of the original car, new XE’s sporting intent has been taken up a level, with contemporary design cues inspired by the F-TYPE sportscar. XE appears wider and lower than before, with larger front apertures, bold graphics and muscular forms eluding to the car’s performance and advanced aerodynamics.

New all-LED headlights with a striking ‘J’ blade daytime running light signature create a more purposeful look. The rear of the car also features a new bumper design and slender all-LED tail-lights with updated signature graphics which accentuate the visual width of the car, giving the XE a more planted appearance.

For an even more performance-orientated character, R-Dynamic models include additional exterior design elements including aircraft winglet-inspired sculpted surfaces, dark mesh detailing to the rear valance and alternative wheel styles. On the interior, the sporting influences continue with sports-style seats with contrast stitching, Satin Chrome gearshift paddles and R-Dynamic treadplates.

The beautifully-crafted all-new interior features extensive use of soft-touch materials, premium veneers and all-new door trims that improve usability and practicality. New XE’s luxurious and technology-packed interior delivers more comfort, quality and connectivity for all occupants. Every aspect of the cabin has been enhanced for increased convenience, improved stowage and better passenger comfort.

The influence of Jaguar’s flagship two-seater sportscar is also evident as both the SportShift gear selector and JaguarDrive Control switch shared with the F-TYPE are on the revised centre console. A new steering wheel, shared with the all-electric I-PACE, features hidden-until-lit graphics and capacitive switches for intuitive, tactile control of key functions.

The new XE is also the smartest and most connected yet. Jaguar’s Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, shared with I-PACE, is also available for the first time in the XE, delivering instinctive control through a pair of seamlessly integrated high-resolution touchscreens. Wireless device charging and clever Smart Settings technology also make their first appearance in the XE.

The first-in-segment ClearSight interior rear-view mirror improves safety and convenience by ensuring the driver has an unobstructed view of the road behind. Using a wide-angle rear-facing camera, the system feeds images to a high-definition screen within the frameless rear view mirror; unhindered by tall rear passengers, poor light or rain on the rear screen.

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, said: “XE’s uniqueness is its totality. Customers get a complete package of progressive design, innovative technology and extraordinary driving dynamics. We don’t do ordinary and new XE personifies this. My team and I get huge satisfaction out of improving a car we’re all so familiar with; we’ve lived with it, we understand its character and it’s a wonderful opportunity to make a great car even better. With new XE, we’ve done just that in every way imaginable.”

Jaguar XE’s lightweight aluminium intensive body structure continues to play a major role in the car’s agile handling, exceptional safety and efficiency. Aluminium makes up 75 per cent of the body and combines with proven rear and all-wheel drive systems, double wishbone front and integral link rear suspension, plus some of Jaguar’s most advanced engines, for dynamic handling and performance.

Standard on all XE models, Dynamic mode amplifies the car’s sporting character, with faster gear shifts, sharper throttle response and increased steering weighting. Drivers are able to shape the driving experience with greater ease thanks to the optional Configurable Dynamics system. This feature allows drivers to set up the vehicle to their personal preference by choosing Comfort or Dynamic settings for the engine, gearbox and steering through the central touchscreen. Where specified, Adaptive Dynamics constantly adjusts the dampers to provide the optimum balance between comfort and refinement at all times and in all driving situations.

The new XE is available with a choice of clean and efficient Ingenium petrol engines. The 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol is available with 184kW and 221kW outputs, badged P250 and P300 respectively.

XE’s entry-level specification now features an automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels, electric leather seats, all-LED headlights and tail-lights with updated signature graphics, front and rear park aid, rear camera and lane keep assist. Customers can select from S, SE and HSE trim levels, with each also available in sporty R-Dynamic guise. A range of option packs provide even greater personalisation:

  • Dynamic Handling Pack: Configurable Dynamics, Adaptive Dynamics, 350mm front Brakes, Coloured Brake Calipers, Bootlid Spoiler
  • Cold Climate Pack: Heated Windscreen, Heated Steering Wheel, Headlight Washers
  • Technology Pack: Head-Up Display, Solar Windscreen, Touch Pro Duo, Interactive Driver Display, Wireless Charging, ClearSight Interior rear-view mirror
  • Convenience Pack: Gesture Bootlid, Keyless Entry, Electric Steering Column Adjustment, Additional Power Sockets
  • Premium Interior Upgrade Pack: Illuminated Treadplates, Bright Pedals, Configurable Ambient Lighting
  • The new Jaguar XE will be available in South Africa in the second half of 2019 with pricing to be announced closer to the time of launch.

ALL-NEW-JAGUAR I-PACE READY TO ELECTRIFY SOUTH AFRICA

Customer peace of mind from eight-year/160 000km battery warranty and two-year/34 000km service intervals

Jaguar has introduced South Africa to the future of motoring with the first electric vehicle (EV) launched together with a rapid public charging network to enable long distance travel between city centres.

With a range of up to 470km from a single charge, the new Jaguar I-PACE offers a viable emissions-free solution to drivers who commute regularly but also enjoy longer journeys which until now have been outside the reach of EV travel.

A state-of-the-art 90kWh Lithium-ion battery using 432 pouch cells can be topped-up with a range of flexible charging types including 7.4kW wall box units installed in homes as well as public chargers along the Jaguar Powerway – a network of rapid chargers placed at various points of convenience such as shopping centres nationwide, along common inter-city routes and at every Jaguar Land Rover dealership in South Africa.

Brian Hastie, Electrification Team Leader, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa, said: “For most I-PACE owners home charging means waking up to the equivalent of a full tank of fuel every day. Beyond this overnight charging habit, the Jaguar Powerway supports charging for long trips. We are already at the point where an electric car can be your everyday car.

Every I-PACE comes standard with a universal “occasional use” charging cable compatible with regular household sockets. This method will achieve a 0-100% charge in around 24 hours. Optional 7.4kW wall box home charger installations priced from R25 000 will achieve the same result in around 12 hours, ideal for overnight charging.

Rapid public charging times will depend on respective charger capacities, but the most prevalent (in South Africa) 60kW types will charge an I-PACE from 0-80% in a maximum 72 minutes and add 100km range in 20 minutes. The I-PACE is capable of accepting a charge capacity up to 100kW, which would enable 0-80% charges in under 40 minutes.

It’s important to note that charging habits will differ greatly to refilling conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, meaning refilling should happen whenever possible, such as every night at home. Refilling ICE vehicles generally happens as fuel tanks approach low levels, while recharging EVs from low or 0% states of charge will be infrequent.

A suite of smart range-optimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system: when plugged in the I-PACE will automatically raise (or lower) the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away.

Two Jaguar-designed electric motors – which feature driveshafts passing through the motors themselves for compactness – are placed at each axle, producing exceptional combined performance of 294kW and 696Nm, and all-wheel-drive, all-surface traction.

The high torque density and high-energy efficiency characteristics of the motors deliver sports car performance, launching the I-PACE from a standing start to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The instantaneous performance is matched with exceptional ride comfort and engaging driving dynamics.

The bespoke EV aluminium architecture uses advanced riveting and bonding technology to deliver a light, stiff body structure. Together with the structural battery pack, it has a torsional rigidity of 36kNm/degree – the highest of any Jaguar.

The battery is placed centrally between the two axles, and as low down as possible with a seal between the housing and the underfloor. This location enables perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity: together with the advanced double wishbone front and Integral Link rear axle with (optional) air suspension and configurable Adaptive Dynamics, this delivers agile handling and outstanding ride comfort.

There will be nothing else on South African roads that look or drive like the Jaguar I-PACE. It is designed and engineered to take full advantage of its smart electric powertrain and maximise the potential of the packaging benefits it brings.

Its sleek, coupe-like silhouette is influenced by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar with a short, low bonnet, aero-enhanced roof design and curved rear screen. This cab-forward design contrasts with its squared-off rear, which helps reduce the drag co-efficient to just 0.29Cd. To optimise the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, Active Vanes in the grille open when cooling is required, but close when not needed to redirect air through the integral bonnet scoop, smoothing airflow.

Inside, the layout optimises space for passengers while sophisticated materials – including the option of a premium Windsor leather interior – and exquisite attention to detail identify this as a true Jaguar.

While a mid-sized SUV, I-PACE’s cab forward design and EV powertrain means interior space comparable to large SUVs. In the rear, legroom is 890mm while, with no transmission tunnel, there’s a useful 10.5-litre central storage compartment. In the rear, tablet and laptop stowage is found beneath the seats, while the rear luggage compartment offers a 656-litre capacity – and 1,453-litres with seats folded flat.

I-PACE introduces the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system to Jaguar. Utilising an innovative combination of touchscreens, capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, Touch Pro Duo is intuitive to use.

To ensure owners always have access to the latest infotainment, telematics and battery energy control software, I-PACE will be the first Jaguar to provide software over-the-air – providing seamless updates.

As a responsible business Jaguar Land Rover is committed to delivering a cleaner future and has plans to prolong the life of its batteries from its electric vehicle with new recycling partnerships and second life energy storage trials.

The I-PACE is available in S, SE and HSE derivatives alongside a First Edition, all inspired by the design of the original concept.

Jaguar Powerway

Jaguar, in partnership with electric vehicle charging authority GridCars, announced the rollout of the Jaguar Powerway in September, 2018. The national matrix of rapid public charging stations currently sees more than 85 stations in the country’s major hubs and along frequently-travelled holiday routes.

The R30-million infrastructure investment makes day-to-day travel, as well as longer day trips and even very long journeys possible for owners of electric vehicles, such as the new Jaguar I-PACE.

In addition to the publicly available charging stations installed in customer parking areas at every Jaguar Land Rover retailer in South Africa, a total of 30 public charging stations have been erected at various points of convenience, such as shopping centres, in the country’s major hubs including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein.

South Africa’s city centres are now also connected by a series of charging stations along the N3 between Gauteng and Durban and the N1 between Gauteng and Cape Town. Cape Town will also be connected to the Garden Route with a series of charging stations along the N2 all the way to East London.

The majority of charging stations on the public network are 60kWh fast chargers, meaning 100km of range will take around 20 minutes for Jaguar I-PACE owners. A charge from 0 to 80% will take a maximum 72 minutes.

Every charging station is also equipped with a 22kWh AC fast charger to accommodate plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) such as the new Rand Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEV models. The AC standard Type 2 socket will allow charging of all EVs currently available in South Africa. The DC charger is fitted with the CCS DC type socket used by the vast majority of EVs in SA and globally.

Jaguar Land Rover owners will use an RFID card to activate the charging station and manage electricity billing to the card. Cards can be credited with simple EFT payments, much like cell phone airtime top-ups. Charging station electricity rates will also be discounted by 25% for all Jaguar Land Rover EV or PHEV owners.

Like petrol, the price of electricity fluctuates, but for now the rate for 1kWh on the card will be between R3 and R3.50 depending where in South Africa it’s redeemed. With a 90kWh battery, a full recharge in an I-PACE will cost between R270 and R315 – a fraction of the fueling costs of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Richard Gouverneur, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa said: “Introducing the new I-PACE together with a network of easily accessible public charging stations is a milestone for motoring in South Africa. Jaguar wholeheartedly believes that electrification will play a major role in the future of this country, and the Powerway brings us closer to our cleaner, sustainable vision.”

Luxury now comes in silent: New Range Rover

Earlier in October, we saw the release of the updated Range Rover Sport which featured new technologies, tweaks to the design and the introduction of hybrid power. The sport wasn’t a revolution, but an evolution, keeping up with automotive trends and in many ways setting a path for others to follow.

These technologies and changes have now also been introduced to another JLR Model, known as the Sports big brother and the start of it all, the Range Rover. The Range Rover has been around for 50 years and over time has developed into a class-leading luxury vehicle. It showcases its poise and class. Quite simply, the Range Rover is most luxurious Land Rover available.

With the 2018 model, the Range Rover takes another step further in automotive luxury. Thanks to newly designed seat frames, the front seats now feature 24-way movement with enhanced comfort due to the use of wider and deeper foam,  and the introduction of heated armrests. Of course, this comfort follows through to the rear seating area. Wider, softer seats which recline by 40 degrees are complemented by 1206 mm of legroom, and this is an increase of 186mm over the previous model. To complete the perfect tranquil sanctuary, the rear seats can be heated or cooled, along with heating options for the arm, foot and calf rests. Further, all seat functionality can be controlled easily via a mobile app.  Those cold South African mornings suddenly don’t seem so cold!

Whether you are working while being driven or driving down to Cape Town for a family holiday, the new Range Rover has you covered in the digital age. With over 17 connection points including USB, Domestic Plug Sockets, HDMI and 12-volt power, none of the vehicle occupants will never be without power or disconnected from the outside world thanks to a 4G WI-FI hotspot which connects to 8 Devices simultaneously.

The most advanced entertainment system ever created by Jaguar Land Rover can also be found in the new 4th generation Range Rover. Touch Pro Duo, which is also featured in the Sport and Velar, combines two high-definition 10” screens on the centre console for unrivalled control and connectivity. What’s more, both screens work in harmony as information can be swiped between screens.
The Range Rover benefits from other new technologies such as the Gesture Sunblind, which is opened and closed by an advanced gesture control system. Further to this,  Air Cabin ionisation which uses charged water particles to purify and clean the air is also available, along with state of the art Pixel-laser LED headlights. With the latter providing lighting for up to 500m ahead and also intelligently blank sections of LEDs, as to not blind oncoming drivers.

Silent Luxury

Jaguar Land Rover’s new hybrid electric engine, dubbed the P400e, takes the Range Rover to a level never experienced before. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 221 kW is mated with an electric motor producing 85kW. This provides a total power output of 297kW and  640Nm of torque, delivered to wheels by a permanent four-wheel drive system.

Drivers of the Range Rover P400e will have two driving modes at their disposal. The first is a Parallel Hybrid mode for balancing fuel economy and battery level. The second mode, called EV mode, is for pure electric and emission-free driving for up to 51km – perfect for dropping the kids off at school or the bumper to bumper traffic on the way to the office.

Charging time can be done overnight with the standard supplied charger, which takes 7 hours 30 minutes to reach a full charge. If you prefer a quicker charge, the Rapid Charging system will complete the process in 2 hours 45 minutes – Impressive!

The latest Range Rover still provides uncompromised off-road ability thanks to Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 technology. This system works cleverly with the electric motor and can deliver maximum torque to all four wheels at zero rpm. We can only imagine the extra control this gives for off-road driving and its increased ability to get out of those sticky situations.
For those who can’t yet pull themselves away from a JLR V8 growl will appreciate the SVAutobiography Dynamic. Announced last year as the most potent production Range Rover ever made, the new variant sees an increase of power by 11kW, bringing the total output of the Supercharged V8 to a hefty 416kW. For those interested in acceleration, 100 km/h is completed in just 5.4 seconds.
Visual aspects have also changed with the introduction of an exclusive Graphite Atlas mesh grille and an updated rear bumper with integrated tailpipes. These changes are unique to the SVAutobiography and allow it to stand out from different variants, most likely though, the noise from its sweet V8 will do this just fine.

The 2018 Range Rover Sport Goes Hybrid

Believe it or not, the Range Rover Sport was first introduced back in 2004. Since then, 13 years have passed, and in that time 732,000 models have been sold. The Range Rover Sport was a leader in design and technology then, and the same applies with the latest 2018 Range Rover Sport

While many of the changes to the 2018 model have been made under the skin, the exterior has undergone light refinement. A more aggressive, sharper profile is instantly noticed,  this can be credited to the new Pixel-laser LED headlights which are complemented by a redesigned grill and new front bumper. These changes, although slight, cement the Range Rover Sport as one of the best looking vehicles on our roads.

Interior design follows suit, with the biggest update here being the introduction of Land Rover’s Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, first pioneered on the staggering Range Rover Velar, this system features two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens for even more control and entertainment. There is also great news for families as the new model also features 14 power points, meaning the fight for the car charger is now over. Included in these 14 power points is a domestic plug socket which is perfect for those wishing to charge bigger devices on the move such as laptops and camera batteries.

As mentioned earlier, big changes to the 2018 Range Rover Sport can be found in the heart of the car and this rings true with one specific model, the P400e – Jaguar Land Rover’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. For those who are worried about the performance of the hybrid compared to the classic V6 or V8, they need not worry as the P400e combines a 221kW 2.0-litre combustion engine with an 85kW electric motor, providing a combined power output of 297kW and 640Nm of Torque.

The P400e provides two main driving modes depending on the driver’s mood or route. The first and default mode is called Parallel Hybrid, this mode combines both petrol and electric drive. In this mode, the driver can choose to optimise battery charge or fuel economy by choosing one of two management systems – The SAVE Function and the Predictive Energy Optimisation Function.

The SAVE Function simply prevents the battery charge from dropping below a preselected level, whereas the PEO Function is a little more interesting. This function is activated by entering a destination into the Satellite Navigation.Once the desired route is selected, the vehicle intelligently combines the electric motor and petrol engine to provide the best fuel economy on the trip, it does this by making use of altitude data contained within the GPS system.

The second driving mode is simply “EV” OR Electric Vehicle mode. As the name suggests, this mode enables the Range Rover to run solely on electric power for up to 51km – perfect for quiet, zero-emission journeys, like popping to the shops or the drive to work in bumper to bumper traffic.

Like everything electric, the Range Rover P400e needs charging. Using the standard 10 amp charger supplied with the vehicle results in a charging time of 7 hours 30 minutes, this, however, can be drastically reduced to a mere 2 hours 45 minutes with the use of a 32 amp Rapid Charging system.

Updates to the Range Rover SVR

Those still not convinced by hybrid power need not worry as Jaguar Land Rover’s world-class V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines are still available, including an entry-level 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder powerplant. For those power hungry, the Range Rover Sport SVR provides even more power than the previous model, with a total of 422kW and 700Nm of torque on tap which results in a 0-100km/h dash of just 4.5 seconds. The supercharged 5.0-litre V8 responsible for this kind of performance is the most powerful in the brand’s history and is not the only component in the SVR to be updated as many chassis enhancements have taken place to increase overall handling capability.

The new SVR stands out even more with a new bonnet design which integrates cooling vents and provides an even more aggressive front end. If the customer wishes, the carbon fibre weave can be left exposed for an even more unique and attention-grabbing look. This bonnet compliments the new bumper design which doesn’t just add to the SVR’S awesome design, but also provides better airflow and cooling to the new brake pads and discs.

Additional design packs such as the Carbon Fibre Exterior Pack adds even more tasteful detailing while a new lightweight 22” performance alloy wheel completes the ultimate SVR package.

All in all, the 2018 Range Rover Sport is an evolution of the previous model. It retains the core essence of what’s made the sport such a popular vehicle over the past 13 years, while adding design and technology which reignites the excitement of the brand, and fixes the Range Rover Sport firmly in the future of the automotive industry.
