Since its acquisition by SMG towards the end of 2021, SMG Toyota Cresta has seen across-the-board changes in the operation of this important franchise. Bringing the SMG philosophy into the dealership was the first step in creating a customer-centric space for all departments.

A department that has benefitted most thanks to the SMG philosophy, has been the service department. Already a slick, modern facility, this department has seen a complete overhaul of the booking and servicing process, which is now more efficient than ever before.

Ineos Grenadier 2B Tour

The INEOS Grenadier
2B tour

The INEOS Grenadier tackled its toughest test yet on the South Africa leg of the 2B Prototype Tour, which kicked off in January 2022 in Cape Town, then moved to the sugar cane fields of Ballito on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast a week later.

The 2B Tour was a rare opportunity for SMG Grenadier customers to be involved in the testing stage of a vehicle’s development, with customer interactions and comments given directly to the technical team. This was after a test drive on the challenging track through terrain not really intended for normal driving.

Developed as a no-nonsense 4×4, the INEOS Grenadier showed customers what is possible when you start with a vision to create the most capable, “built on purpose” vehicle in the world, where every stitch and every surface is built to get the job done.

With the 2B Tour moving to the next leg and gradually heading across the globe, there are still a lot more miles to cover, and testing to do, and judging by the feedback from customers, Grenadier is certainly on the right track.

Last week, SMG welcomed BMW & MINI Constantia as well as BMW & MINI Cape Town City into the Group, following in the footsteps of the already existing Cape Town dealerships- BMW Century City and BMW & MINI Tygervalley

Both dealerships come equipped with a wealth of knowledge and experience with the Constantia dealership led by Dealer Principal Matthew James, a brand veteran with over 20 years in the business. BMW Cape Town City is led by the dynamic Ryan Reeder, a long-time SMG team member with a reputation for excellence.

Matthew “Bushy” McKelvey Breaks World Record

A Record-breaking achievement

Recently, SMG BMW Motorrad Umhlanga was privileged to be involved in the World Record breaking moment of inspiration from BMW Motorrad rider, Matthew “Bushy” McKelvey, at the Phakisa oval in Welkom. Bushy broke the world record for the longest distance covered on a motorbike in 24 hours- 3477kms, a record he reclaimed after holding it in 2014.

Riding a BMW S1000 XR, Bushy, a bilateral amputee from Pietermaritzburg, added over 67km to the previous world record of American Carl Reese, who held the record for almost 5 years. McKelvey, who turns 60 in February, set his latest record the hard way, fighting centrifugal forces at an average speed of over 170 km/h around the short 2,5km Phakisa oval. In comparison, the previous record was set on a 13,7km oval with a gentle 1.7km radius which allows for considerably more speed.

This amazing achievement also had a greater purpose. McKelvey used the record attempt to raise funds for the Grand Lodge of SA’s one million meals for children initiative.

SMG Cares 2021

As the year draws to an end, we look back on 2021 with gratitude and pride. While we were faced with another year full of challenges, we cannot help but reflect on what we have overcome, and appreciate the courage and tenacity of our staff at SMG and the communities that surround us.

If there is one thing this year has taught us, it is that there is power in unity. Together we have fought, and continue to fight, against the spread and devastation of COVID-19, we rallied together as strangers in true South African Spirit and together we can make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate. This was the inspiration behind our “Season of Hope” Christmas campaign, driven by SMG Cares.

This year, we were on a mission to reach further. Our KwaZulu-Natal dealerships partnered with The Robin Hood Foundation and donated an incredible 5 vehicle loads of essential items that will be distributed amongst the very deserving communities and organizations across various areas that they assist.

“Passionate about bettering the lives and futures of those in need, the Robin Hood Foundation is committed to mobilising resources from businesses and individuals and putting them directly into the hands of the poor grannies, needy mums and children in our surrounding impoverished and AIDS-affected communities.”


Our amazing dealers in the Western Cape donated toiletries and care packages to NOAH (Neighbourhood Old Age Homes), which gives comfort, safety and dignity to social pensioners in the Woodstock area.

“After a lifetime of working, many of these old people are stripped of their dignity and become victims of loneliness, destitution, abuse, illness and depression. Our vision at the Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) is healthy & thriving communities led by our elders.”
