Medi Response Earthquake Search and Rescue

When Turkey and Syria appealed for international aid following the devastating series of earthquakes that took place in the early hours of 6 Feb 2023, the trusted and dedicated Medi Response members did not hesitate to volunteer their time and expertise. As the mobility partners for Medi Response, SMG help to ensure that their teams would be able to respond rapidly to emergency situations around the country. In this case, they took their operation to an international level.

KZN’s very own Bradley Hatfield, Paul Herbst and Leon Fourie were selected by Gift of the Givers to join their humanitarian team. Since arriving in one of the worst affected parts of Turkey our Medi Response members have played a crucial role in the search, rescue and treatment of survivors. The number of casualties has since passed 21,500 and experts say it will continue to rise. Rescuers have not given up hope and are working tirelessly to save as many lives as possible as temperatures in some areas drop to sub-zero.

SMG would like to salute those who have selflessly come together in this time of need, including the Medi Response members who went above and beyond their duties as South African EMTs.

SMG Grenadier Demo Day

Over a few balmy days in January, future SMG Grenadier owners got to experience the vehicle up close and personal at the Clifton Canyon 4×4 Centre in Hillcrest. Over 3 days, invited guests and customers already on the order list were given the opportunity to see the true capability of this purpose-built 4×4.

Under the expert tuition of Travis Duggan, drivers covered every obstacle of the 4×4 course with ease, with the technical sections of this course designed to take driver and vehicle to the very limits of their abilities. The fact that the Grenadier took these obstacles in its stride is testament to the millions of miles of testing that INEOS put the Grenadier through, taking it to the most extreme places in the world.

One of the most encouraging customer comments from the day was the fact that the Grenadier made even the most inexperienced 4×4 driver, more capable and more confident than ever before. So while the Grenadier is the perfect expedition vehicle, it also has a place for the weekend off-road enthusiasts

SMG Cares drives hope this festive season. December 2022.

For most, December is a time to relax, reflect and recuperate after a busy year, December is also a time to give. This year, SMG Cares focussed on organisations that are doing incredible work for the most vulnerable and needy communities in our areas.

In the Western Cape, our passionate staff identified Hagar’s Choice as a worthy beneficiary this year. This inspiring orphanage cares for young children between newborn and ages 6, giving them a place of safety, love and support while they wait for adoption. Each of our resident dealerships were tasked with purchasing items for the children, from basic necessities to toys, showing these little people what it means to be loved and cared for. At the handover, the staff spent time with each child, learning their stories and showing them the true meaning of compassion and love.



Our KZN dealerships were equally busy spreading hope to local communities with the support of the Gugu Dlamini Foundation. This incredible organisation, named after Gugu Dlamini, the late HIV/AIDS activist, distributed essential goods to communities in and around Durban. The Foundation identified specific areas that have been hard hit by the economic and environmental challenges that 2022 brought to so many.

With cars loaded to the brim, led by the inspirational Gugu Dlamini team, the staff drove into many isolated areas to distribute goods. Helping to make this festive season, just a little more comfortable for those who need

South African Schools Water Polo Interprovincial Tournament

SMG was recently involved in the South African Schools Water Polo Interprovincial Tournament held in Durban. As one of the fastest growing aquatic sports in South Africa, water polo has gained popularity amongst school children across all provinces.

This year, the annual Interprovincial tournament is the largest schools’ water polo tournament in the world, comprising of approximately 110 teams, ranging from U13 to U19 in both boys’ and girls’ sections.

Between heavy rain and intense Durban heat, over 100 teams battled it out to determine the top provincial water polo teams in the country. Played over 4 days at various aquatic venues in Durban, the competition was world-class and showed the strength of South African water polo and the incredible support it has.

SMG is proud to be supporting schools sports. As the breeding ground for world-class athletes, these events showcase the immense sporting talent our country has to offer.

There’s no doubt that the new Range Rover and Range Rover sport are the pinnacle of luxury and dynamic handling, but now we can add safely to that long list of achievements. Recently, both models were awarded a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, with individual scores among the highest tested. These new models join the long list of Range Rovers to achieve a five-star rating under the stringent Euro NCAP safety protocols introduced in 2009.

New Range Rover scored 87% for child occupant safety and 72% for vulnerable users safety, with Range Rover Sport achieving 85% for adult occupant safety and 82% for Safety Assist.

These exceptional safety ratings come on the back of years of intensive design, engineering and manufacturing by the Jaguar Land Rover team using strong mixed-metal technology and cutting-edge active safety systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

But safety doesn’t stop on the exterior. Both vehicles are also equipped with Cabin Air Purification Pro1, a pioneering system that takes interior air quality to the next level, monitoring CO₂ levels inside the vehicles and automatically introducing fresh external air when required, keeping the driver alert all the time.

SMG Yamaha Scooter run

Last Friday, an intrepid group of scooter enthusiasts left Umhlanga for the inaugural SMG Yamaha Scooter Run. Local participants joined the team from SMG Yamaha for a casual cruise to local seafood restaurant, Tightline in Umdloti.

Even the slight chance of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the old and new crew who arrived with a diverse mix of retro and racing scooters. Hosted by SMG Yamaha’s own Marc Torlage and General Manager, Steve Bailey, the enthusiastic pack of bikers took in the scenic coastal scenes en route to the restaurant.

Red Bull Box Cart Race round 2 – 6th November 2022

Earlier this month, an enthusiastic team of motoring, engineering and driving enthusiasts from SMG MINI Tygervalley & SMG BMW Century City competed in the 2022 Red Bull Box Cart Race in the Bo-Kaap at the foot of Signal Hill.

Both teams entered the event with solidly built box cars and gave tremendous support to their brave drivers. The SMG MINI Tygervalley foreman, stock car enthusiast (and racing driver) built a cart we think would pass through the local roadworthy testing station and SMG BMW Century City building a robust well designed light box cart well suited for the 600m run.

Under the watchful gaze of the 22 000 cheering spectators, our teams raced the 600m track with vigour, competing against 57 other enthusiastic challengers. The intricate track was designed by Dakar Legend Giniel De Villiers, and needless to say it was challenging course, featuring tight turns and even a cobblestoned obstacle course. After an exciting day for both SMG teams. The fastest time for the day was 47 seconds, with SMG MINI Tygervalley and SMG BMW Century both putting in a strong runs, completing the course in 58 seconds and 60 seconds respectively.  

Now in its 22nd year, the Cape Town leg was the 120th box cart race to take place, and only the second in South Africa. While competitors are racing for time, points are also give for showmanship, creativity and artistic flair- something the SMG teams had in abundance. 

Both dealership teams and staff did SMG proud. Even though there were no podium places on the day, the teams showed genuine passion and commitment and a healthy dose of humour.

For years, the BMW 7-series was considered the ultimate vehicle for anyone wanting supreme luxury and space in the most dynamic driving package. The 2023 7-series builds on this heritage to create the most luxurious and advanced ultra-grand sedan ever made.

With an overall length of 5.39m (131mm more than the outgoing model), space and comfort is more than generous and the exterior details, like Swarovski crystal headlights, a kidney grille with illuminated surrounds, dynamic lighting with graphical projections and 19-inch alloy wheels or larger mean that road presence is taken to another level.




As you’d expect, the interior is a showcase of luxury with exclusivity heightened by fine wood or carbon trim finishes and a selection of four interior colours and front armrest heaters. Technology comes to the fore with a panoramic glass roof, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound with speakers integrated into the headrests, a 12.3-inch driver’s display, a 14.9-inch infotainment unit, parking assist, steering and lane control assist, active navigation, automatic speed limit assist, route monitoring, traffic light recognition, lane change assist, and a manoeuvre assistant.

And for the ultimate in-car entertainment experience, buyers can opt for the 31.3 inch 8K theatre screen that folds down from the roof at the rear.




In-line with the electric strategy of BMW, the new 7-series will add a fully electric version to the range- the i7. Powered by a 101.7kWh battery delivering a staggering 745Nm between each wheel, the i7 will be able to sprint to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds and continue to a top speed of 240km/h.

Expected pricing for the new 7 Series is as follows:

• BMW 740i –               R2,160,000
• BMW 740d xDrive – R2,280,000
• BMW i7 xDrive60 –   R2,825,000

Customers will also have the option of adding the M Sport Package, for an additional R75,000 or the M Sport Package Pro for an extra R115,000.

SMG Cares Winter outreach

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” These profound words by Nelson Mandela were the inspiration for the SMG Cares team who recently initiated successful outreach activations in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

Winter can be a challenging season for all of us, but particularly for the poor and vulnerable. This was the motivation behind BMW Durban City teaming up with the Gugu Dlamini Foundation to host a blanket drive. BMW Durban City invited customers and employees to drop off blankets at our collection point, which were then delivered to the Foundation for distribution to people in need. The main purpose of the Gugu Dlamini Foundation is to improve the lives of youth and young women in South Africa, as well as providing advice, comfort and help to young women affected by HIV.

In the Western Cape, the passionate SMG Cares team at BMW Constantia committed themselves to a refurbishing project at the Leliebloem Child and Youth Centre in Belgravia. This is the third year that SMG Cares has worked with this inspiring organisation who provide accommodation for young people rescued from troubled backgrounds. The SMG Cares team got their hands dirty with a new paint job, repairs, cleaning and plumbing of the Roslyn Cottage, one of the hostels at Lelieblom. Thanks to the assistance of staff and clients, and through generous donations of toys, games and clothing, Roslyn Cottage is now a place of comfort and safety for vulnerable girls between the ages of 11 and 17. It was so inspiring to see the progress made at their facilities.

Thank you to all of our selfless staff, clients and friends who participated in these activations. Every minute spent makes a lifetime of difference in so many lives.

SMG joins INEOS Grenadier at NAMPO Cape 2022

Now in its third year, the NAMPO Cape Exhibition recently took place in Bredasdorp Park in the Western Cape. As the province’s premier agricultural and trade show, NAMPO was the ideal platform for SMG to introduce the INEOS Grenadier to more than 20 000 spectators over 4 days.

Featuring more than 500 exhibitors from the world’s premier agricultural machinery brands, NAMPO attracts farmers and organisations who are looking to embrace the latest in technology and innovation. As one of the newest brands in the SMG stable, Grenadier attracted a substantial amount of interest, thanks to it’s purpose-built exterior, and it’s no-nonsense approach to rugged capability.

Many spectators were impressed by the muscular stance of the vehicle, with a few mentioning the hard wearing, tactile interior, which is perfect for tough farm life and other 4 x 4 applications.“Grenadier is a special product for SMG as it represents the Group’s move to becoming a mobility brand, providing vehicle solutions for every type of buyer,” said SMG Marketing Manager Warren Mockler.

For SMG, the reception that Grenadier received from a very discerning and hard to please audience was testament to the quality and innovation of this vehicle, and we can’t wait to see it on every farm road from Bredasdorp to Bergville.
